RTVE chooses SAPEC’s SIVAC-ONE to broadcast the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

  • Twelve encoder/decoder pairs of the modular SIVAC-ONE platform will manage the contributions from Paris to Madrid (Spain) of the Spanish Radiotelevision (RTVE) within the framework of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
  • The Spanish public broadcaster will benefit from a glass-to-glass latency of less than 170 ms with HEVC encoding at 4:2:2, delivering world-class audiovisual performance for its UHD windows.
  • SAPEC’s encoding and decoding solutions have played a key role in RTVE’s two major coverage events this summer: the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and UEFA EURO 2024.

SAPEC’s SIVAC-ONE modular platform, a solution designed for the most demanding UHD productions thanks to its resilience and versatility, will enable RTVE to make contributions between Paris and Madrid (Torrespaña facilities) with a glass-to-glass latency of just 170 ms. SAPEC’s ultimate encoding and decoding solution will feed both the corporation’s HD broadcasts and an ambitious UHD coverage that will start at the end of July and run until the end of August.

All eyes are on the imminent celebration of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. From Friday, July 26 to Sunday, August 11, 10,500 athletes from all corners of the planet will compete in 32 disciplines that will be broadcast to all corners of the globe. Once again, this year, RTVE will provide a complete coverage of the event which, beyond broadcasting the most relevant disciplines provided by the feeds of Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), will have a complete personalization to bring the Spanish viewer closer to the performances of their compatriots.

SAPEC will play a key role in the Spanish broadcaster’s mission to bring the emotion to millions of households. Specifically, it will deploy a total of twelve encoder / decoder pairs of its SIVAC-ONE platform that will manage signals from the three locations of RTVE in Paris (a set in Trocadero, the Casa de España set and the IBC itself) to ensure the contribution with the best guarantees to Torrespaña (Madrid) in UHD.

SIVAC-ONE, which was already used in test mode for the UHD broadcast of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, certifies its solvency and evolution as a stable, powerful and versatile solution to meet the most demanding requirements of today’s broadcasting. In fact, the signals transmitted by RTVE for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will feature 4K resolution (up to 2160p50/60), HDR and WCG signaling, a glass-to-glass latency of only 170 ms and 4:2:2. In addition, supporting the broadcast world’s global effort to make broadcasting more sustainable and environmentally friendly, SAPEC has minimized the power consumption of its encoder/decoder to only 25 watts per unit.

SAPEC’s encoder/decoder will also debut its new 12G electrical and optical interface at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a new feature introduced at NAB 2024 that facilitates its integration in the most demanding UHD contexts.

SAPEC, UEFA EURO 2024 and RTVE

RTVE, an operator that has historically relied on SAPEC solutions for its daily operations and highly demanding external broadcasts, has also been the Spanish broadcaster that has had the broadcasting rights for the UEFA Euro 2024, an event held in Germany that ended on July 14 with the proclamation of the Spanish team as the best European team. To offer this extensive coverage, which covered the entire German territory for more than a month, RTVE once again relied on several LAGUNA units.

The multichannel UHD/HD/SD LAGUNA platform, compatible with HEVC, H.264 and MPEG-2 standards, is available in four different versions: SINGLE (single channel), DUAL (two channels), QUAD (four channels) and OCTAL (eight channels). This continuously evolving system is compatible with 100% IP and hybrid environments, as well as traditional broadcast environments; it recently released its compatibility with RIST, a protocol promoted by Video Service Forum for the transport of content via public networks, and continues to add new features such as its celebrated ability to be used as gateways.
