RTVE saves more than 40% bandwidth with the SAPEC’s HEVC solution
RTVE has acquired about 20 pieces of video coding equipment AVANTOS by Sapec. This took place last January 2020 after several tests carried out with real-time signals. RTVE will use AVANTOS to increase the contribution network between the facilities in Madrid (Torrespaña) and Barcelona (Sant Cugat) given the increasing need to exchange content between the two main cities of the country.
RTVE once again relies on Sapec, highlighting the efficiency and video quality of the equipment. In this way, the corporation extends a collaboration of almost two decades with SAPEC having contributions covering main headquarters, territorial centres and news facilities.
Before this, the algorithm used for these HD signals was only H.264. After this acquisition, RTVE begins to use HEVC (H.265) with Main422 profile and 10bits, simultaneously with the existing equipment.
With HEVC, RTVE maintains the high video quality of its contributions, saving more than 40% of video bandwidth compared to H.264. The considerable reduction in bandwidth means that RTVE can have more video links without increasing the bandwidth used. In addition, SAPEC’s HEVC (H.265) solution practically matches the latency of H.264, which has been an essential decision factor due to the live events covered on these links.
Avantos Encoder & Decoder
Sapec was one of the first manufacturers in the world to launch a product on the market with HEVC coding in real time. In 2016, SAPEC was awarded, with the Panorama Audiovisual Award for the best Broadcast and Distribution Technology HEVC thanks to this very same solution.
For this compression format (HEVC/H.265), Sapec continues being a benchmark in the Broadcast market. The AVANTOS solution supports Main422 and Main420 profile with 8/10bits per pixel in addition to other important features such as sending double TS, logo insertion, high density of embedded audio (up to 8 stereo PIDs), 3G-SDI input. All this with a consumption below 90W per decoder or 150W per encoder, including the auto-switch circuit of hot-swappable PSUs.
All these features, together with the considerable bandwidth savings (> 40%), have been the key factors for RTVE, in order to continue relying on SAPEC for the upgrade of its network to HEVC (H.265).
Sapec, in addition to the contributions, also works closely with RTVE in other R&D projects, as well as in its satellite headends.
