Sapec: IP based remote production solutions by Nevion

Remote production has become nowadays a necessity for most Broadcasters. Technology allows them to produce television from almost anywhere and without the need to move large amounts of equipment and personnel. SAPEC, Nevion’s official distributor, offers equipment and services for this type of projects in Spain and Mexico.

Nevion counts with the right equipment, technology, and experience to carry out this type of projects. Which has made the Norwegian company, a leader in the transport of audio-visual signals through different types of networks.

This leadership is achieved based mainly on its SDN VideoIpath orchestrator and controller, and on Virtuoso; a “Software-Defined media node”, which allows us not only to adapt, but also to enable the transport, processing and monitoring of video, audio and data into the IP world for the production of programs or events. Without forgetting to incorporate the new technologies and means of transport that are emerging.


VideoIpath is the management and orchestrator system that controls, not only the equipment immersed in the system, but also the network elements (switches) used for transportation. In a way, it becomes the master of these switches and manages their bandwidths, link availability, priorities, etc. This makes this management system an SDN (Software Defined Networks) controller that ensures that connections are executed in the system and network to avoid packet loss, link saturation and prevention of potential problems in the event of failure on the equipment or the network

VideoIpath is a software with access to the user through a web browser and based on three blocks of applications: Operation, Monitoring and System. It has a very intuitive WEB GUI very easy to operate and with different user levels. Additionally,

VideoIpath can work on LAN and WAN (essential for remote production) as well as mixed IP/Baseband environments.


To adapt the baseband signals that we can have in a television studio or a realization control to IP, we need gateways.

Virtuoso is the Nevion solution that performs these different conversions that may require compression and/or adaptation to the IP world.

Virtuoso is capable of compressing signals in JPEG2K, JPEG-XS, TICO and encapsulating uncompressed signals to IP according to SMPTE ST-2110 and SMPTE ST-2022/6 standards.

Virtuoso counts with 1, 10 and 25 Gbps IP interfaces and is also capable of monitoring (QoS and QoE) the signals that pass through it and the possibility of with protection and encryption. In addition, it has dedicated functionalities for audio such as embedding and de-embedding, routing, shuffling, delay, gain, etc.

Videopath and Virtuoso are the two pillars, together with the network elements, on which Nevion builds its solution for remote production over IP. In addition, it can integrate the rest of the devices part of the system besides gradually incorporating new transport technologies such as the cloud or 5G.
